Futile Cycles Boggiano seeks the origins of a Ligurian family name spread throughout the Caribbean: nowadays, hundreds of Cuban citizens bear the surname Boggiano because they descend from the slaves of the coffee plantation that Antonio Boggiano had on the hills between Puriales and Polo Viejo, near Trinidad de Cuba.
The project includes the creation of a video, a wall installation and an artist’s book.
This project began in November 2017, immediately after the volume on Gaggini went to press. The first findings came a few years earlier, however, because the first time I went to Trinidad to look for documents about Antonio Boggiano was in 2014. At the time, I had no idea of what I might find. When I learnt that there was a person in Trinidad with this surname, I thought of a descendant of the ancient emigrant I was interested in. It was in February 2014, soon after meeting with Francisco Boggiano, that I drew the first family trees of the Boggianos. It was an instinctive reaction to the sense of confusion I was getting from all those names Francisco was listing. There were two trees: that of his family and that of some of Paco Boggiano’s descendants. Years later this kind of depiction would become the pattern for the large installation that, together with the video and the book, constitutes Futile Cycles: Boggiano.

The question that lies at the heart of this book and of the whole art project is what to do with the heritage that one has been given, whether we are discussing the Boggiano clan, you the writer and inheritor of a certain history or historical mystery and an Italian culture that frames this mystery, and me, someone who has inherited an ambiguous and conflicted Caribbean legacy. I mostly turned away from that original inheritance because I grew up in the United States and it seemed to me more crucial to try understand, learn from, and ultimately critique the culture of my adopted country.
You turned toward the mystery of the Boggianos to see what they could tell you about the wider developments within the Caribbean. I think it’s valuable that you have uncovered a hushed history of entrepreneurship, travel, exploitation, enslavement, aspiration, intermixing of cultures and ethnicities, and laborious self-possession. You’ve turned toward the question of what to do and answered as a researcher who means to put the history in a form that is legible and logical to other audiences. And you’ve turned toward the question as an artist, teasing out the profound and curious threads of the Boggiano story to examine them as meaningful creative activities. You have said: “art is giving meaning to things, to existence, through what is of no use”. I would put it slightly differently: Art gives meaning to us through the creation of non-utilitarian objects that are in turn profoundly invested with meaning in the acts of research, design, and construction.

Antonio Boggiano arrived in Cuba in 1796. He settled in Trinidad, a city on the Caribbean coast of the island, at that time undergoing a phase of great productive and commercial expansion. He quickly made his fortune, trading in colonial goods and even serving as a consignee for French slave ships. He was thus able to purchase ships, houses and land. His coffee plantation, first mentioned in an 1809 document, was one of the largest in the area and came to have up to 130 slaves. It was customary for slaves to take on the master’s surname and to change it when they were resold. For this reason, the labor force at the Nuestra Señora de la Misericordia plantation had the surname Boggiano and had to replace it with the surname of the new owner Diego Julián Sánchez when the plantation was sold in 1857. Cuban citizens bearing the surname Boggiano are thus the descendants of the small number of people who were able to buy their freedom by paying their own price to the owner.
The project included the creation of a video, a wall installation and an artist’s book. In the video, some stories collected by the author in the Polo Viejo area intersect with the conversation of a group of Boggiano cousins at the end of a lunch. The wall installation consists of large family trees that have people born in Africa at the apex, and recently born children at the base. The installation is formed by painted resin elements and integrates twenty-two oval-shaped photographic portraits taken in 2018. Similar to the previous volume on Gaggini, the book is a historical essay. It consists of twelve chapters followed by an extensive section of documentary sources and by a dialogue between the artist and the art critic and author Seph Rodney.
In 2021, Eredi Boggiano editorial project won the tenth edition of Italian Council, the program for the international promotion of Italian contemporary art. The book was published in Italian by Quodlibet in 2022. The following year the same publishing house released the English and Spanish translations (Boggiano Heirs – Herederos Boggiano).
